It took a record 42 hours to clear the jam. Owners of cars in Japan are required to have parking space before being issued with a license.  Public shopping mails and other places are known to have their parking spaces on the roof due to space.  Owing a car in Japan without a parking space is going against the law and can add up-to a jail term of up-to 3 years.  Because of the number of jams occurring each day, citizens prefer to use the motorcycles and bikes to work.  These need fewer parking spaces and are known to pass between the cars quite easily.

The large numbers of cars on the Japanese roads are some of the underlying causes of the long traffic snarl-up on the roads.  Sizes of the roads coupled with construction work on the road contribute considerably to the daily snarl-ups.  Consideration should also be made to regulate normal working hours so that car owners do not have to be on the road at the same time.
